“Clara Engel’s voice comes to me from that deepest of all places, imaginative space, from which she visually retrieves an inner landscape converted by breath into the rock equivalent of poetry. Rarely has a voice sounded so authoritative, so unapologetic in its disclosures, so sure of its direction in going home into song,” - Jeremy Reed "Timeless songs that sound at home in the ribcage of rock n roll’s skeleton.” -Janaka Stucky listen: http://claraengel.bandcamp.com contact: claraengel@gmail.com |

I don’t want mercy to be mild
I want mercy to defile
The one that cuts my roses down
Is the one that I’m loving
I don’t want mercy to be sweet
I want the sting of your deceit
The one that drags my pride on its knees
Is the one that I’m loving
I don’t want mercy to be kind
I want the dregs, the bones, the rind
Sour apple, kiss of spite
I want to regret you
All I want tonight
Is to be without
Is to be let out

this is why i don’t vlog.
i need to make another one…almost 2 year between vlogs. bad.
(i never ended up recording in a church. i recorded said album in a studio instead. the album is called ‘ashes and tangerines’)
a lady with laughing eyes,
a peacock,
and a phoenix,
cry
as they guard the filthy gates
that open to the sea
(what’s the price, mad birds, for my release?)
one is stricken with grief, one is proud, one is incarnate brutality
we give them royal names and power
now we have perfect enemies!
and we plan the perfect murder
on that day we’ll charge the open sea
i plant a severed fist amidst the weeds
a twisted fruitless tree will rise, come spring
(what’s the price for my release?)
how fast my tears float away
in this weightless night
light catches the dust
dust cakes our lips and dulls our eyes
the moulting body writhes
overcome with loss and joy
rapture-drunk and freed
(what’s the price for my release?)

My tribute to Virginia Woolf.
I don’t remember if I’ve posted this on here before (I had a tumblr account before, which I deleted, and I have an unsettling sense of deja vu when I post songs and videos of mine.) A re-post is not the end of the world though, and this time I’ll give some context, because I often am stingy with the context-giving. I wrote to Stefan Orschel-Read a few years ago, (on Myspace! remember that…? I’m still sad that that site became so useless), to tell him that I loved the clothes he made (my introduction was the series he did inspired by Orlando. I love the film Orlando by Sally Potter, and I also love the book by Virginia Woolf). Making fashion inspired by gender-bending literature is a lovely and exciting idea. I didn’t expect that myspace-message to translate into Stefan using my music for the catwalk to his show a few years later, but it did. Watching this still makes me really happy.
p.s. all the songs used are downloadable on my bandcamp page: http://claraengel.bandcamp.com
(and you wouldn’t believe how much I benefit from some people legally buying my music, it helps me to survive and stuff… and speeds up the progress I can make on my forthcoming releases.)
